Wharton Center

While undergoing construction, the Wharton Center asked the AIGA MSU Student group to design a series of environmental graphics for their temporary firewalls. We used a combination of computer randomization and manual techniques to create the final design. I contributed to the stylistic direction by suggesting a grid of shapes based on a square. I also wrote multiple programs using the Processing coding language that helped automate the production process.

After we completed the design process, it was necessary to create a manual for the painters. I designed the manual to use a coordinate system, which reflected the square grid that the design was based on. It described the coordinates of each shape as well as the stencil and color to use. The manual was sized to lay nicely on the rung of a ladder and aside from a master manual, smaller manuals were organized based on color so the painters wouldn’t need to have several cans of paint open at one time.
